A bathroom wall can look perfect on handover and still fail a few years later if the wrong lining sits behind the tiles. Choosing the best plasterboard for wet areas is not about picking the green board by default. It is about matching the board to the amount of moisture it will face, then getting the waterproofing, joints and finishing right.
For most Australian homes, the best result comes from using moisture-resistant plasterboard in low-moisture parts of a bathroom, laundry or ensuite, and fibre cement sheeting where water exposure is higher. The exact choice depends on where the wall is, whether it will be tiled, and how the room is built and ventilated.
What makes a wet area different?
Wet areas deal with regular humidity, splashing and cleaning moisture. Bathrooms, shower rooms, laundries and toilets all fall into this category, but not every wall in those rooms takes the same punishment.
A wall beside a vanity has a very different job from a shower recess wall. Steam and occasional splashes are one thing. Daily direct water exposure is another. Standard plasterboard is made with a gypsum core and paper facing, so it can soften, stain and break down when moisture gets behind the surface. Once that happens, tiles may loosen, paint can peel and mould can take hold.
The board matters, but it is only one part of the system. Waterproofing, tile adhesive, sealant, ventilation and correct installation all work together. Skipping one step to save money usually creates a more expensive repair later.
Best plasterboard for wet areas: the right board for each zone
Moisture-resistant plasterboard for general bathroom walls
Moisture-resistant plasterboard, often called wet-area board or green board, is generally the right choice for bathroom and laundry walls outside direct shower zones. It has a treated gypsum core and moisture-resistant facing designed to cope better with humid conditions than standard board.
It is a practical option behind tiles around a vanity, along a bathroom wall away from the shower, or in a laundry where the wall is not regularly soaked. It is also suitable for painted areas where the room has decent extraction and airflow.
However, moisture-resistant plasterboard is not waterproof. That point gets missed regularly. It should not be treated as a substitute for a compliant waterproofing membrane in areas that need one. If water gets through cracked grout, failed silicone or an unsealed penetration, the board can still be damaged.
Fibre cement sheeting for shower recesses and high-exposure areas
For shower walls, bath surrounds with a shower over the bath, and other areas exposed to direct and repeated water, fibre cement sheeting is usually the safer choice. It is more stable around moisture than gypsum-based plasterboard and provides a strong backing for waterproofing and tiles.
Fibre cement is harder to cut and install than plasterboard, but that extra effort is worthwhile in the right location. It helps reduce the risk of swelling, crumbling edges and movement behind tiles when moisture finds its way into the wall system.
The sheet still needs correct waterproofing. No board, including fibre cement, makes a shower wall waterproof by itself. The membrane needs to be applied over the prepared surface, with proper attention to corners, junctions, screw holes, pipe penetrations and floor-to-wall transitions.
Standard plasterboard for dry sections only
Standard plasterboard can still have a place in a large, well-ventilated bathroom, such as on a ceiling or a wall well away from wet zones. But it is rarely worth taking chances in a small bathroom, poorly ventilated ensuite or compact laundry where steam hangs around.
If there is any doubt about ongoing moisture, use moisture-resistant board. The material cost difference is modest compared with reopening a painted wall or replacing a tiled section later.
Do you need waterproofing over wet-area board?
In areas covered by Australian waterproofing requirements, yes. Water-resistant plasterboard does not remove the need for waterproofing. A qualified waterproofer or tiler should assess the space and apply a suitable membrane system before tiling where required.
This is particularly relevant around showers, baths, floors, wall junctions and plumbing penetrations. The waterproofing layer is what stops water reaching the board and framing behind it. The tiles and grout are the visible finish, not the primary waterproof barrier.
A good installation also avoids unnecessary holes in the wet zone. If shower screens, towel rails or accessories must be fixed through tiled walls, penetrations need to be planned and sealed properly. Small shortcuts around screws and fittings are a common source of hidden water damage.
Board thickness and framing matter too
The best sheet can still perform poorly if it is fixed to uneven framing or installed with the wrong fasteners. Walls need to be straight, firm and properly supported so tiles do not flex. Movement is one of the main reasons grout cracks and water starts travelling behind a tiled surface.
Your installer should use the correct sheet thickness for the application and follow the manufacturer’s fixing requirements. Joints should be set appropriately, and recessed edges, corners and cut-outs need careful treatment. In a shower recess, poor preparation behind the waterproofing will show up eventually, even if the tile work looks tidy on day one.
Ceilings deserve attention as well. A bathroom ceiling sees a lot of steam, especially in homes without a strong exhaust fan. Moisture-resistant plasterboard is often a sensible upgrade for ceilings in bathrooms and laundries, paired with a properly ducted exhaust fan that sends moist air outside rather than into the roof space.
Common mistakes that lead to wet-area repairs
The first mistake is using standard plasterboard behind shower tiles because it is cheaper or readily available. The second is assuming green board alone is enough. Both decisions can leave the wall vulnerable.
Other problems often come from rushed workmanship: gaps around pipes, unsealed joins, poorly installed waterproofing, tile movement, failed silicone, or a bathroom exhaust fan that barely moves air. A leaking shower does not always announce itself with a puddle. It may start with a musty smell, bubbling paint in the next room, a swollen skirting board or loose tiles near the base of the wall.
If you are renovating an older bathroom, do not cover obvious damage with a new sheet and hope for the best. Find the source first. A plumbing leak, failed shower screen seal or cracked tray can keep feeding moisture into a newly lined wall.
Choosing the right finish after installation
The finishing system should suit the room just as much as the board does. Tiled shower areas need a well-prepared substrate, compliant waterproofing and quality tile installation. Painted bathroom walls need thorough setting, sanding and a paint system designed for humid interiors.
For painted wet-area walls, a clean Level 4 finish is generally suitable. A Level 5 set finish can be worthwhile where strong natural light or downlights expose every joint and surface imperfection. It is especially useful in modern renovations with smooth walls, darker paint colours or a feature wall near a vanity.
Good ventilation protects every finish. Run the exhaust fan during showers and leave it on afterwards to clear moisture. Open a window where possible, repair leaking taps early and replace failed silicone before water gets behind tiles.
